Day 11: Listen Without Anticipating a Response
I’m not sure much more needs to be said. Just listen. It is so easy to start thinking about what you are going to say next, instead focus on what is being shared with you. .
Beyond listening to those you speak to, listen to the sounds around you. The heater in the cold, the cars on the streets, the children laughing at nearby schools and playgrounds, the sounds of puppies playing. Listen with your ears but even more fully with the heart.
We are so quick to come up with a reply, an answer, whether it fuels the conversation or dominates it (usually unintentionally). What parts did you hear with more clarity? Less judgement? Did you find yourself feeling that same need to add it after you paused to hear the whole conversation? Did you clue into something that is going on in someones life without them directly discussing it?
When people really listen to you, do you not felt heard? Validated? Present and grateful? Allow others that same courtesy and see how the conversation, relationship, and day blossom.
